What is better for my smile? Invisalign or Veneers?

That question is impossible to answer without a Smile Consultation with a dentist that is experienced with both solutions to a straighter smile, Invisalign Orthodontics and veneers.

Are you going to a Columbus cosmetic dentist that can offer you the best solution for your smile situation? If your dentist can’t do both Invisalign and veneers, how do you know?
Some patients want veneers because the treatment doesn’t take as long as orthodontics.   They want a straighter smile, and they want it now!  Invisalign takes an average of 12 months but some cases take as little as 6 months.  Veneers in our office can be done in some cases, in just one appointment using our Cerec CAD-CAM machine.
But if you have nicely shaped teeth, a better option maybe to use Invisalign and not put a veneer over nicely shaped teeth.  Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners so no one realizes you are straightening your teeth.
It all starts with smile consultation which we offer as a complimentary service to someone that is looking to improve their smile.  Dr. Thompson will take the time to talk with you and understand what you want an explain to you with actual patient photos what is possible for your smile.

In the end the choice is yours!

But if you don’t know all the possible options, how do you make the right decision?  When seeking a smile makeover, make sure the cosmetic dentist you visit can do all sorts of cosmetic treatments to get the right smile for you.  After all, you don’t really want chiclet teeth, do you?

Invisalign Teen was designed to meet the specific needs of the non-adult comprehensive treatment market….. yes I got this material from an Invisalign Teen press release.

Dr. Thompson has treated teenage patients with traditonal Invisalign in the past as long as the teen

  • had all their adult teeth
  • had top teeth in front of their bottom teeth(in the dental world known as a class 1 occlusion)
  • and understood and was responsible enough to wear the Invisalign aligners at all times.

Invisalign orthodontics has been used by general dentists and orthodontists on more that 3/4 of a million patients since it was introduced.  In 2008, Invisalign introduced Invisalign Teen to address specific orthodontic issues related to teens.

Dr. Thompson has been using Invisalign since 2002 and has treated over 140 patients with it.  He is now able to use this new Invisalign product, Invisalign teen.  Only a limited number of general dentists in Columbus Ohio can treat patients with Invisalign teen.  Based on Dr. Thompson’s experience with Invisalign and his use of traditional orthodontics in the past, he was selected to provide the Invisalign Teen solution.

Imagine looking great in your school pictures while you are straightening your smile.  You can’t say that about traditional braces with all those ugly brackets and wires.  Read the rest of this entry »

Tooth Whitening - What works, what doesn’t, and why

Over-the-counter whiteners have been flooding the market for many years.  Each with it’s own gimmick, or gadget, or promise of sparkling white teeth in just minutes…..

How does tooth whitening work?

Teeth have been shown to whiten when exposed to a peroxide like solution.  How much teeth whiten depends on three things:

  1. The concentration of the peroxide in the whitening solution
  2. The time the whitening solution stays on the teeth
  3. The color of the teeth before the whitening started Read the rest of this entry »

Why would anyone go someplace else for Lumineers or Veneers?

As a dentist I some times get caught up in just doing dentistry.  I recently saw a patient that had been a patient at Grandview Dental Care for years and I hadn’t seen her in a while.  It appeared that in her absence from my dental practice, she had gone to another dentist in town for some veneers and she wasn’t pleased with the results.

We talked about some different options and in the end I encouraged her to go back to the dentist that had done the work and let them know your not pleased… and see what happens.  That is what I would want a patient of mine to do.

After the appointment I turned to my assistant and said “Why would she have gone somewhere else for veneers”?  My assistant only said ”Maybe she didn’t know you did Veneers” Read the rest of this entry »

Stop Wondering about Cosmetic Dentistry. Learn about it.

All too often patients come to me after many, many years spent wondering

  • Wondering if the issues with their smile can be solved
  • Wondering if the cost (in dollars) will be too high
  • Wondering if the change will change their looks
  • Perhaps hoping that it will
  • Perhaps hoping that it won’t

One thing I can tell you is that most cosmetic dental problems can be solved.  The materials that are available in dentistry are light-years ahead fo what was available 15 years ago.  And the technology keeps getting better.

There are products that can match your tooth color precisely in both color and transparency, crowns and veneers (in the hands of an experienced dentist) that can look as natural as your real teeth.  Implants that can replace missing teeth and function just like the real thing.

Invisalign can give you a straighter smile with out the wires and brackets.  And the dental technology goes on and on and the majority of these smile enhancers are affordable.  You don’t have to makeover each tooth in your mouth to make a dramatic impact.

And I love this stuff!  Yes, I’ve been at for 30 years but I enjoy learning what’s next.  It keeps the job exciting!  Helping someone look and feel better is very rewarding work.

The point is that if you are considering smile improvement, stop wasting time wondering.  Talk to me and learn more about what is available.  The answers may surprise you.
